PETROGLYPH

by JOHN VAN NATTER

Soaring canyon walls along the Colorado river in south eastern Utah are decorated with ancient rock art from the Fremont period circa 450AD to 1250AD. These representational human forms along with big horn sheep and other animals, including abstract patterns and spirals are typical of rock art created by the Fremont people. These petroglyphs by ancient artists were created by chipping away the desert varnish that creates a beautiful patina on red sandstone over centuries of weathering. This historically significant design is magnificent.
