MAITLAND AZTEC-MAYAN SCARF

by MARLENA

In Maitland Fl, near Orlando, there is a unique art museum. It is mainly made up of standing open walls with Aztec murals and stone cutouts. I was inspired to create this elegant silk scarf. The museum promptly purchased 4 for their gift shop. The Maitland Art Center was founded in the 1938 by visionary artist and architect Jules André Smith (1880-1959)as an art colony. The Center was originally called the Research Studio, hosting famous painters, sculptors, and printmakers of the times. The Art Center is one of the few surviving examples of "fantasy" architecture in the Southeast, the Center has been recognized by the State of Florida as a historic site and has been entered on the National Register of Historic Places. It features Mayan/Aztec motifs and includes 23 separate structures linked by beautiful gardens and courtyards.
