Some prefer the vision of a vast landscape, but it is the intimate details of nature that attract me.
Fallen feathers, insects, shells and leaves draw my eye. Many creatures often dismissed as repugnant are
simply amazing when viewed close up and with an open mind. Nature's creations are so remarkable that I prefer
to depict actual species, although they may seem imaginary through my interpretation.
My artwork combines drawing, design, color and nature - with just a touch of whimsy. It is in large part a tribute
to my scientist father, who introduced me to the wonders of natural history at an early age. On nature walks, he
identified the birds and plants, while I showed him where fairy gardens were hidden. Both viewpoints have always intrigued me.
I am passionate about color, and it is my main mode of expression in watercolor, pastels, mixed media,
illustration, and beaded jewelry. I find it thrilling to experience vivid colors in nature, so I am especially
attracted to the flora and fauna of the tropics. Butterflies appear especially frequently in my work, as their
infinite patterns and colors make them ideal subjects. Nature remains my primary source of inspiration, and color my principal mode of expression.
After earning a BA in biology, I started my own needlepoint design business, Designs by Lucy. I honed my
drawing and design skills during this period, then reveled in the freedom to experiment when I focused on
fine art twelve years later. I enjoy working in a wide range of subjects and styles, from detailed realism to intuitive abstracts.
My art has been published as cards, stickers, 3-D pictures, giclee prints, book covers, and in calendars,
art instruction books, magazines, and childrens' books. I am delighted to now be able to offer it on limited edition silk scarves.
